The new version of the asset details page delivers functional improvements, a more modern aesthetic and leverages the full size of your screen. Here are some key benefits, followed by a deeper dive into what key changes are included.
Key benefits
Larger preview
- This new layout provides a much larger area for the main preview, giving you more visual detail without having to zoom in.
Metadata column
- The metadata is now situated in a scrollable column, which allows you to read information about the asset without losing visual context of the preview, this is akin to the new upload experience.
- This panel can also be collapsed, so when navigating left and right between assets you can effectively view as a slideshow.
Responsive design
- This layout is best suited for modern large screen sizes, however it does scale elegantly to mobile devices when compared to the previous version
Improved related assets
- Related assets are now in a more prominent position below the main preview, making them easy to access and improving discoverability of relevant assets.
1. Column layout
The first thing you'll probably notice about this redesign is the new column based layout.
The page is now comprised of two columns, one for the main preview and one for the metadata.
We've adopted this layout style for a few reasons:
The main preview can take up a much larger portion of the screen, giving you a better view of the asset without zooming in. Metadata is now in a scrollable column on the right hand side. This ensures that you don't lose the visual context of the main preview whilst looking at the asset's data. This new layout also introduces a consistent format for different file types (previously image, video, audio and file had different layouts).
The right hand column can also be hidden by a toggle in the top right hand corner:
2. Preview overlay
Whilst hovering over the main preview more information and controls are revealed. This reduces visual noise unless you want to interrogate this data.
In the top left hand corner we have the breadcrumb or location and the number in the set.
In the centre row we have the previous asset button, the zoom in button and the next asset button. You can also use the left and right arrow keyboard keys to navigate between assets.
In the bottom row we have key asset information.
3. Actions section
At the very top, we've compacted all of the action buttons into a single strip. The main labels have been simplified to icons and tooltips. This gives both a more generous hit area and a more modern feel.
Additional actions that used to appear as links below the buttons are now in a dropdown menu (click the "More" button to open and close it).
4. Metadata column
All the asset's metadata is now displayed in this scrollable column instead of a table.
By displaying data in a column we reduce the line length which makes data less taxing to read.
The overall font size has been increased and there's additional margins between each metadata item to make it easier to find what you need. Long sections of text, keywords and folder lists are now truncated so they don't take up too much space. They can be opened and closed using the 'Shore more' and 'Show less' links.
Tables such as the 'Embedded metadata' now appear in pop-out modals.
5. Related assets
Related assets have been moved to a more prominent position on the page so that they are both easier to access and more visually appealing.
They can be accessed either from below the main preview or on the right hand column.
By clicking either location, the full list of related assets and relationships will appear in an overlay:
You can now also drag and drop to reorder your related assets:
