AI Metadata allows you to instruct AI on how to fill in fields automatically during the upload of image assets. This is configured in the admin area and will then apply to all new uploads. It can be used to generate AI Alt text or AI Descriptions for example, and it supports output in most major languages. If you'd like help with this, or if you just want to check if an idea you have makes sense prior to configuration, then please contact support.
Example: Populating an Alt-text field via AI
In this case we will instruct it to complete the 'Alt text' field.
What is Alt text?
Alt text, short for alternative text, is a brief description of an image that is included in the image's HTML code. It's used by assistive technologies, like screen readers, to provide information about the image to users who cannot see it, often due to visual impairments. Well-written alt text is crucial for website accessibility and can also improve search engine optimisation (SEO).
Configuring an Alt text field
(You should already have an Alt text field in your Asset Bank, but if not you should create a new 'Alt text' text attribute first before the steps below. This could be a text area attribute for example.)
Visit:
Admin > Attributes > Embedded Data Mappings
Then add a new attribute/field mapping like this:
If you want to copy and paste this prompt, the text is: "Describe this image in 15 words or less, without using redundant phrases like this image contains"
Once configured, new image assets that you upload will have this field automatically populated via AI.
Here is an example result with this configuration:
Configuration tips
In my example I've renamed my "Alt-text" attribute to "AI Alt-text" to convey that AI will complete it. I've also added some help text that clarifies this when you hover over the '?' like this:
I did this to make it clear for upload users.
To do this visit the attribute via:
Admin > Attributes
Find 'Alt text', and click 'Edit'
Here you can rename it, and you can also click the 'Advanced options' link to find the 'Edit help text' (which is the additional text that will appear when you hover over the question mark, visible only when in upload or edit mode).
Ensuring the Alt text travels with the file after download
A nice additional step is to inject this value (or the value that the uploader tweaks it to), into the file when it is downloaded from Asset Bank. This way the Al Alt text travels with the file and can be auto-extracted when used in a Website CMS (Content Management System) for example.
To do this visit:
Admin > Attributes > Embedded Data Mappings
And create a new 'download' mapping like so:
This will take the 'Alt text' value and inject it into the standard embedded metadata field for this type of data, the "XMP Alt Text (Accessibility)" field. It will do this at point of download, or via CMS integration.
Can I generate values for existing assets?
Yes, on the Admin > Attributes > Embedded Data Mappings page, you can click on "re-run metadata extraction for existing assets". On the page it takes you to you can click on the relevant attribute (e.g. in the example above it would be "[Other]:AI: Generated Value > Alt-text". Once selected you can click 'Run Extraction'.
Feature Credit Limit - 10,000 assets per month
Before running this for existing image assets, it is worth noting that the AI Metadata generation comes with 10,000 credits per month. So if you have more than 10,000 existing assets that you want to process, then please contact our Support Team to discuss first.
What else can I use prompt led metadata generation for?
It's very flexible by nature, so if you have novel use case beyond AI Alt text, or AI Description feel free to discuss this with us first by contacting support.
Supported Languages
OpenAI do not provide a full list of supported languages, but most are supported including English, Spanish, French, Chinese, German, Russian and Arabic. It is easy to test for supported languages by creating a prompt that asks AI to generate an image description in the desired language, and then reviewing the results for accuracy.
AI Metadata Limitations
Currently the AI model does not know anything about your metadata or company domain. It does not learn from your metadata, so the results it gives will be based on its general understanding of the image contents. It also only works for image assets, not video, docs, etc.
Hosting Location Support
The AI metadata feature is supported across most of our hosting locations. At present, it is not available for environments hosted in our Hong Kong data centre due to OpenAI service limitations.
